UNS – Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta has been named the best state university in Indonesia and the fourth best in Southeast Asia according to the AppliedHE University Rankings 2025. This marks a significant leap from last year’s rankings, where UNS stood 10th in Indonesia and 32nd in Southeast Asia.
UNS Rector, Prof. Dr. Hartono, dr., M.Si., expressed pride in this achievement, stating that it solidifies UNS as one of the leading state universities in Southeast Asia and further strengthens its position in global education.
AppliedHE University Rankings is an independent assessment that evaluates universities worldwide based on various factors, including teaching quality, research, societal contributions, and excellence in technology and innovation. The rankings also emphasize internationalization, sustainability, and industry collaboration.
“The rankings were officially announced on November 18, 2024, through the AppliedHE website https://appliedhe.com/public-university-ranking-asean-2025/. This independent institution aims to provide a comprehensive overview of university standings and quality in the global academic landscape, offering insights relevant to global market needs,” Prof. Hartono explained on Tuesday (19/11/2024).
Prof. Hartono commended the dedication of the UNS academic community, attributing this recognition to their hard work and unwavering commitment to delivering quality education and positive societal impact. “We are incredibly proud that UNS has achieved a leading position in Indonesia and gained broader international recognition,” he added.
The AppliedHE University Rankings 2025 evaluates institutions using six key criteria: Teaching and Learning (40%), Employability (15%), Research (15%), Community Engagement (10%), Internationalization (10%), and Reputation (10%).
UNS excelled in several major indicators, particularly research quality, teaching standards, and its expanding international collaborations. The university’s significant contributions to addressing social and environmental challenges in Indonesia also played a crucial role in its high ranking.
As of 2025, such rankings hold growing importance for prospective students and educational stakeholders, emphasizing the value of universities with both strong academic performance and global recognition.
